Short answer
Often, yes. A play couch can be a bed for toddlers past the cot stage, older children, adults and guests when it lies flat at real bed size, but some are sold as play furniture only, so check the maker's instructions. It is never a place for a baby under 12 months to sleep: the American Academy of Pediatrics says babies should sleep on a firm, flat surface in a cot.
Key takeaways
- A play couch can be a bed for toddlers past the cot stage, older children, adults and guests if it lies flat at bed size and its maker allows sleeping on it.
- No play couch, floor cushion or mattress topper is a place for a baby under 12 months to sleep, for naps or at night.
- Bettar Play's FAQ says its sets are designed to fit single (90 x 190 cm) and super single (106 x 190 cm) beds and bed sheets, and a king bed needs two sets.
- Bettar Play's Signature 8-pc and 9-pc Sets (12 cm thick) convert to a single or super single mattress; the Lite 5-pc Set (10 cm) makes a single.
- All 41 selected stations in the Malaysian Meteorological Department's (MetMalaysia) published 2021 dataset averaged 72.9% relative humidity or more, so a play couch bed needs airing.
Who can sleep on a play couch, and who should not?
A play couch that lays out flat at bed size can suit toddlers who have moved out of the cot, older children on sleepovers, adults who need a spare bed, and guests, whether it is sold as a play couch, a kids' sofa bed or a floor cushion bed. It does not suit a baby under 12 months, for naps or at night, or anyone who finds getting up from the floor hard.
Check the maker's instructions first: if they say a play couch is not for sleeping, treat it as play furniture. Bettar Play describes its sets as multipurpose home furniture: a sofa, a mattress and more. The Bettar Play FAQ lists pregnant mothers who need a floor bed for prenatal massage and adults who need an extra bed for guests among its users.

Why should a baby under 12 months never sleep on a play couch?
A baby under 12 months should never sleep on a play couch because the safe-sleep advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the NHS asks for a firm, flat mattress in the baby's own cot, with nothing soft around them. Foam cushions with joins between pieces are not that surface, however firm they feel to an adult hand. The same applies to anything sold as a baby sofa bed.
The AAP's advice covers babies up to one year of age. It warns that the risk of sleep-related infant death is up to 67 times higher when a baby sleeps with someone on a couch, soft armchair or cushion, so never doze off with a baby on a play couch. The AAP also lists mattress toppers, pillows and non-fitted sheets among the soft objects to keep out of a baby's sleep area.
“A firm surface means that it shouldn't indent when your baby is lying on it. Any surface that inclines more than 10 degrees isn't safe for your baby to sleep on.”

A 2010 Malaysian study found how common these practices were. In a Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) study of 263 babies under 8 months in Kuala Lumpur (Medical Journal of Malaysia, 2010), 89.4% had soft toys, pillows or bolsters in their bed or cot, and in 46 families (17.5%) a baby had co-slept with a family member on a sofa at least once. The UKM study notes that a 2005 Malaysian Paediatric Association and Ministry of Health booklet advised a firm surface without pillows or soft toys.
Can a play couch be a child's everyday bed, or only for sleepovers?
That depends on what its maker says. If a play couch's instructions say it is not for sleeping, treat it as a sofa, not a bed. Bettar Play describes its Signature 8-pc and 9-pc Sets as converting “to a supportive single or super single mattress”, and its FAQ says its sets are designed to fit single and super single beds and bed sheets.
A play couch sold as a mattress and one sold only for play can look alike, so the maker's own description decides it. For a child's only bed, used every night, ask Bettar Play for its guidance before you buy. Set up as a bed, a play couch moves into a bedroom, which answers one of the common myths about soft play couches: that it belongs only in the living room.
What makes a play couch work as a bed?
A play couch works as a bed when four things line up: it lays out to the length and width of a real bed, it is thick and supportive enough to lie on, its pieces sit tight with no gaps, and its covers come off for washing. Anything less is a lounger, not a bed.
- Bed size. Bettar Play's four Large cushions each measure 90 x 47.5 cm, so end to end they make 90 x 190 cm, the size of a single bed.
- Thickness. The Signature 8-pc Set's cushions are 12 cm thick and the Lite 5-pc Set's are 10 cm thick.
- Supportive core. The Signature 8-pc Set's cushions are made of super high-density PU foam and 100% natural latex, and Bettar Play calls the mattress layout “supportive”.
- Washable covers. Bettar Play's Signature 8-pc Set comes with double-backed, thick polyester covers that are removable and machine-washable.
Bettar Play's sets come from a family trade that began in the 1960s with mattresses and rattan sofa cushions sold from a lorry; the family factory that makes cushions, pillows and mattresses makes Bettar Play in Malaysia. The Signature Cushion 8-pc Set and Signature 9-pc Triangle Set lay out as a mattress at night and a play sofa by day; the Lite 5-pc Set makes a single-size mattress or a cosy seat. Bettar Play's FAQ says its fabric is OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified and SGS tested, and that the core is “CertiPUR-US® certified and ECO INSTITUT certified HIGH Density Polyurethane Foam and 100% natural latex” (what CertiPUR-US and eco-INSTITUT each check is set out on their own sites).
Will a play couch fit a single or super single bed and its sheets?
A play couch fits a bed and its sheets only if its maker designed it to, so check that the maker allows sleeping on it, then measure it laid flat. Bettar Play's FAQ says its sets are designed to fit any single (90 x 190 cm) and super single (106 x 190 cm) size bed and bed sheet, and that a king bed needs two sets.
| Bed or use | Size or need | What Bettar Play offers |
|---|---|---|
| Single bed | 90 x 190 cm | Signature 8-pc or 9-pc Set (12 cm thick) or Lite 5-pc Set (10 cm thick) |
| Super single bed | 106 x 190 cm | Signature 8-pc or 9-pc Set, which Bettar Play says converts to a super single mattress |
| King bed | Two sets | Two Bettar Play sets, as its FAQ advises |
| Baby under 12 months | Not a use | None: a baby sleeps in a cot on a firm, flat, tight-fitting mattress with a fitted sheet only (AAP) |
The sets can be seen at the Bettar Play store locations before you buy.
How do you set up a play couch as a bed?
To use a play couch as a bed, lay its large cushions flat on a clean, dry floor, push them tightly together so there are no gaps, cover them with a bed sheet in the size its maker gives, and put the spare pieces away.
- Lay Bettar Play's four Large cushions end to end to make a 90 x 190 cm single layout.
- Push the cushions firmly together, with no gap between pieces or between the bed and the wall.
- Cover the layout with a single bed sheet, a size Bettar Play's FAQ says its sets fit.
- Put away any pieces not in the layout at bedtime, so the bed stays one flat surface.
How do you keep a play couch bed fresh in humid weather?
Keep a play couch bed fresh by following its maker's care rules. Bettar Play's FAQ says to vacuum the fabric regularly, remove and wash the covers according to their washing instructions, keep the cushions away from heat and direct sunlight because of the natural latex, and not soak them in water for long. Its cushions are primarily designed for indoor use.
Malaysian air is humid: all 41 selected stations in MetMalaysia's published 2021 dataset averaged between 72.9% (Petaling Jaya) and 88.7% (Cameron Highlands) relative humidity. So stand the cushions on their sides indoors to air, not out in the sun, and dry spills fast: the US Environmental Protection Agency says damp materials dried within 24 to 48 hours will, in most cases, not grow mould.
Frequently asked questions
Can my baby nap on a play couch if I am watching?
No. A baby under 12 months should not sleep on a play couch, even for a supervised nap. The AAP's advice is to place a baby on their back for all naps and at night, on a firm, flat sleep surface in a cot, bassinet or play yard. A play couch is for awake time, such as tummy time with an adult watching.
Can an adult or a guest sleep on a play couch?
Yes, if the play couch lays out at full bed length and its maker allows it. Bettar Play's FAQ names adults who need an extra bed for guests among its users, and its Signature sets lay out at 90 x 190 x 12 cm, also a sleepover bed for an older child. Comfort is personal, so see a set in a store first.
How many Bettar Play sets do I need for a king bed?
Two. Bettar Play's FAQ says a king size bed needs two sets. One Signature 8-pc or 9-pc Set covers a single (90 x 190 cm) or super single (106 x 190 cm) bed, and the Lite 5-pc Set covers a single. For a queen bed, ask Bettar Play.
Where can I see a Bettar Play set before buying?
Bettar Play's store locations page lists where the sets can be seen, including the Getha Flagship Store in Petaling Jaya, Getha Mid Valley, SEIBU at The Exchange TRX (Genie by Getha), Babyland SS2 and Getha in Penang. The RM10 fabric sample set shows the four Signature cover colours at home.
