Short answer
Take the play couch cover off and machine wash it to its care label, then clean the cushion inside with no more water than the stain needs. Both have to be dry right through before they go back together. Bettar Play’s cushions stay indoors, away from heat and direct sunlight — and in Malaysian humidity the drying matters as much as the washing, especially once a set has started to smell musty.
Key takeaways
- Bettar Play’s FAQ asks owners to vacuum the fabric regularly, wash the covers to their washing instructions, and “do not soak the product in water for prolonged time”.
- The US Environmental Protection Agency says damp material dried within 24 to 48 hours will, “in most cases”, not grow mould.
- A play couch cover dries slowly here: Malaysia’s average daily minimum relative humidity can reach 70% in the wettest months and the average daily maximum is over 94%, while the EPA advises keeping indoor air below 60%.
- The Signature sets’ large, long and short cushions contain 100% natural latex, and Bettar Play’s product page says “do not sun”.
How do you wash a play couch cover?
A Bettar Play cover is removed and machine washed to the washing instructions that come with it. No wash temperature is published online, so the care label decides. Bettar Play’s FAQ page holds the rest of the routine: vacuum the fabric regularly, wash the covers to their washing instructions, keep the cushions away from heat and direct sunlight. (Still choosing a set? Bettar Play’s guide to choosing a soft play sofa covers buying; this is care.)
- Vacuum the cover while it is still on the cushion, so grit does not grind into the fabric in the wash.
- Take the cover off — on the Signature Cushion 8-pc Set that is a cover for each of the eight pieces, the largest four being 90 x 47.5 x 12 cm.
- Wash the cover to its care label, and do not overload the drum. A cover that cannot move cannot rinse clean.
- Dry it indoors with air moving over both faces, and not in a hot dryer: the FAQ asks for no heat, so only the care label can tell you a dryer is allowed.
- Put it back on only when it is dry to the touch inside and out. A cover returned half-dry keeps the damp inside the set.
Two different fabrics carry the Bettar Play name, so follow the label in your hands: the cover supplied with the Signature 8-pc Set is described as a double-backed thick polyester removable, machine-washable cover, while Bettar Play describes the cover sets sold separately as 100% polyester with a soft fleece backing, non-skid and “over 30,000 rubs”.
Can you wash the cushions inside, or only the covers?
The covers are the washable part. Bettar Play says the water-resistant fabric is “easy to spot clean with water” and asks owners not to soak the product in water for a prolonged time, so the sensible rule is to use no more water than the stain needs and keep the cushion itself out of the machine: a thick cushion dries slowly in a Malaysian living room.
For a spill or a stain, blot the patch rather than rubbing it, use a damp cloth, then put a fan on the piece; for a stain on the cover, the care label is again the authority. The US Environmental Protection Agency’s guide to mould and moisture sets the deadline: “It is important to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.”
Why does humid weather make cushions smell, and what stops it?
Fabric that stays damp is what starts the smell, and Malaysian air leaves less margin than most. The Malaysian Meteorological Department’s climate page records an average daily maximum relative humidity “over 94%”, and an average daily minimum “as low as 42% during the dry months and as high as 70% during wet months”. At its daily low, in other words, a wet-month day can still sit near 70%.
Those are outdoor figures, and the room matters more. The EPA advises households to “keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity” — well under wet-month outdoor air, and within reach of an air-conditioned room. That gap is the job: the drier the room, the sooner a washed cover and a damp cushion are dry. It is also why vacuuming earns its place, since in ENTFACT-646 University of Kentucky entomologists Simona Principato, Micheal Potter and Zachary DeVries write that house dust mites do best “around 75-80 degrees F and 70-80 percent relative humidity” (about 24 to 27°C).
Holding a room under 60% all day is not realistic here without help, so the levers that matter are mechanical rather than chemical:
| What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Run the air conditioner’s dry mode or a dehumidifier in a wet spell | Moves the room towards the EPA’s indoor advice instead of chasing the smell with air fresheners |
| Point a standing fan at a damp piece until it is dry right through | Moving air is the safe way to dry a cushion that has to stay away from heat |
| Vacuum the fabric regularly, as the FAQ asks | Lifts the dust that settles in between washes |
| Store the set stacked, off a damp floor | Stacked, Bettar Play puts the 8-pc set at about 90 x 47.5 x 60 cm, clear of mopping water |
What if the cushions already smell musty?
Work with air, not with products. Take every cover off and wash it, vacuum the cushions, then stand the pieces on edge indoors with space around them and a fan running, so air reaches all sides and not only the top. A dehumidifier or dry mode in the same room shortens the job.
Two things not to do. Do not put a Bettar Play cushion anywhere hot: the FAQ asks owners to keep the cushions away from heat and direct sunlight, which rules out a hot tumble dryer and the balcony alike. And skip bleach, fabric softener, steam cleaners and home remedies — nothing is published about what is safe on the fabric, latex or foam, so ask the shop first. If the smell outlasts a washed cover and a dry cushion, or there is visible mould, email info@bettarplay.com or call +60 11 5868 8545, and keep children off that piece until the shop has replied.
How should you dry and store the set without ruining the latex?
Not in the sun. The large, long and short cushions in Bettar Play’s Signature sets contain 100% natural latex, and the Signature 9-pc Triangle Set page states it plainly: “Large, Long and short cushions contain 100% natural latex - do not sun”. The FAQ adds that the cushions are “primarily designed for indoor use”.
Between uses, store the set stacked indoors rather than squeezed behind a sofa where no air reaches it. The Signature Topper Play Mat, 90 x 190 x 2.5 cm, comes apart the same way: in Bettar Play’s words, “unzip, remove, and machine wash”.
“Absorbent or porous materials, such as ceiling tiles and carpet, may have to be thrown away if they become moldy.”

That is why drying a cushion inside the EPA’s 24- to 48-hour window is worth the fuss: a cover is washable and replaceable, while a cushion soaked and left in a humid room could be harder to rescue. Frequently asked questions
Do the Signature sets and the Topper Play Mat have removable covers?
Yes. A removable, machine-washable cover is on record for the Signature Cushion 8-pc Set, the Signature 9-pc Triangle Set, the Lite 5-pc Set, the Triangle Signature Cushion, the Long and Short Cushions and the Topper Play Mat.
Can I buy a replacement cover instead of washing a badly stained one?
Yes, for the Signature 8-pc. Bettar Play sells Signature 8-pc Cover Sets separately in Coconut Beige, Flamingo Pink, Honey Mustard and Ocean Green, each in one colour or paired with a second. Replacement covers are not listed for every piece in the range, so email info@bettarplay.com or call +60 11 5868 8545 about the one you need.
What if there is mould on the cushion itself, not the cover?
Stop and ask before you soak it, and keep children off that piece in the meantime. Soaking adds water to a cushion that already has too much, and the EPA warns that porous materials may have to be thrown away once they are mouldy. Email info@bettarplay.com or call +60 11 5868 8545 and describe what you see.
Can I wash the Signature Topper Play Mat’s cover the same way?
Yes. Bettar Play describes its cover as removable and machine washable — “unzip, remove, and machine wash” — and the fabric as water-resistant, easy to wipe clean, scratch-resistant and non-skid. For the mat itself the FAQ rule holds: spot clean with water, and do not soak it for a prolonged time.
