A guest bed without a sofa bed: what works in a Malaysian home

What can you use as a guest bed if you do not want a sofa bed?

Seven options do the job of a sofa bed: a foldable foam mattress (tilam lipat), a roll-up or futon-style floor mattress, a folding camp bed, an air mattress, a daybed or trundle bed (katil sorong), a Murphy wall bed, and a modular cushion set. Choose by who sleeps on it and how often. The table’s cost banding and its cautions are our own judgement, not published figures.

What size does a guest bed need to be?

A guest bed for one adult needs a single (90 x 190 cm) or super single (106 x 190 cm) surface, and matching one of those sizes is what makes ordinary bedding fit. Bettar Play’s FAQ says a Signature set “lays flat as a single (90x190cm) or super single (106x190cm) mattress and fits that size of bed sheet” — a sheet from any shop, or from its own bed sheet range.

Thickness separates a bed from a topper. The Large cushions in the Signature sets are 12 cm thick; the Signature Topper Play Mat is 2.5 cm at 90 x 190 cm, sold for “single beds, guest beds, daybeds”: a layer to go over something, not the bed itself.

Who should not sleep on a floor-level bed?

Two kinds of guest are better off not on a floor-level bed: anyone unsteady on their feet, who is better on a camp bed or a daybed, and a baby under one year, who belongs in a cot, bassinet or travel cot. The first is our reading of the fall risk; the second is the American Academy of Pediatrics’ own rule.

On the first: the NHS notes that “anyone can have a fall, but it’s more likely if you’re older or have mobility problems”. That is about falls in general, not beds; our reading is that getting down to a floor mattress and up again at night is the moment to design out.

On the second, the American Academy of Pediatrics says “place your baby on their back for all naps & at night”, asks for a firm, flat surface that “shouldn’t indent when your baby is lying on it”, and lists mattress toppers among the soft objects to keep out. No cushion set and no topper is a baby’s sleep surface. Its sharpest warning is about falling asleep with a baby on soft furniture:

The risk of sleep-related infant death is up to 67 times higher when infants sleep with someone on a couch, soft armchair or cushion.

Where does a guest bed live when nobody is using it?

A guest bed is easiest to keep when it folds, rolls, deflates or stacks small. A camp bed stands behind a door, an air mattress goes into a cupboard, a roll-up into a wardrobe, and a cushion set stacks into a corner block: Bettar Play’s FAQ says that “when stacked together, the set has an approximate size of 90x47.5x60cm”.

For a bed different people sleep on, the covers come off: the Signature 8-pc Set page describes a “double-backed thick polyester removable, machine-washable cover”. Wash them before a visit and again after.

Does a floor bed work in Malaysia’s humid weather?

A floor bed works here, as long as it is aired. The Malaysian Meteorological Department puts the average daily maximum relative humidity at “over 94%”, with the average daily minimum “as low as 42% during the dry months and as high as 70% during wet months”. A mattress left flat on tiles for weeks gets little airflow underneath it.

The US Environmental Protection Agency advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally 30% to 50%. Its 24-to-48-hour rule is written for a leak or a spill: damp material dried within that time will “in most cases” not grow mould. Neither source is about guest beds, so the airing step is ours: between visits, unstack a set and stand the pieces apart, with a fan on.
