Short answer
A Montessori floor bed is a firm, flat mattress set low enough for a toddler to climb in and out without help. Move your child to one no earlier than the first birthday, usually once they try to climb out of the cot. In a Malaysian home, raise the mattress on a low slatted base so humid air and cool tiles are less likely to trap damp, and childproof the whole bedroom.
Key takeaways
- The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the NHS advise a cot or bassinet for babies under 12 months, so this guide starts the floor bed after the first birthday.
- An NHS Healthy Child service says the move from cot to bed can be anything from 18 months to 3 years.
- On a floor bed the whole bedroom is the sleep space: anchor furniture, limit windows to a 12.5 cm opening, cover sockets, gate the door.
- In Malaysia's humid climate a mattress left flat on tiles can grow mould; a slatted base and regular airing help keep it dry.
- A good floor-bed frame is low, stable and smooth-edged, and the mattress fits it tightly.
What is a Montessori floor bed?
A Montessori floor bed is a mattress that sits on, or just above, the floor with no rails, so a child can get into and out of bed alone. Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) presents it as a tool for sleep independence: the adult stays close while the child settles at first, then steps back as the child learns to fall asleep in their own space.
“Looking at the physical environment, the most important developmental aid we can offer is the floor bed.”

In the AMI paper, Schayot explains that a floor bed lets the adult sit beside the child and withdraw gradually, which, she writes, is “all but impossible” with a raised crib. AMI also stresses order: bedtime steps “should be the same each time”. The AMI paper describes the floor bed from babyhood; because the AAP and the NHS advise a cot until 12 months, this guide starts it at toddlerhood.
When is a toddler ready for a floor bed?
A toddler is ready for a floor bed no earlier than the first birthday, usually between 18 months and 3 years, often when the child starts climbing out of the cot. The AAP and the NHS advise a cot or bassinet with a firm, flat mattress for babies under 12 months, so the floor bed belongs to the toddler years.
The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust's Healthy Child service says the move from cot to bed “can be anything from 18 months to 3 years”, and a good sign is a child who tries to climb out. The AAP's safe-sleep advice covers babies up to one year old, as does the NHS.
Dr Rachel Moon, a paediatrician who has chaired the AAP Task Force on SIDS, writes that “once your toddler can climb out of their crib, it may be time to transition to a ‘big kid’ bed”. The 15 months sometimes quoted comes from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) rule for toddler beds sold in the US: a product standard, not a health age limit.
How do you make the whole bedroom safe?
Childproof the bedroom as if it were one large cot, because a toddler on a floor bed can get up and explore while you sleep: anchor chests of drawers and shelves to the wall, limit how far windows open, cover sockets, clear cables and small objects off the floor, and gate the bedroom door.
The CPSC's Anchor It campaign states that “anchoring all furniture with drawers, doors, and shelves to the wall prevents tip-over injuries and deaths.” Its 2023 tip-over report estimates 6,400 furniture tip-over injuries a year among US children treated in emergency departments (2020 to 2022), 1,800 involving a chest of drawers and 1,000 involving shelving.
A home-safety guide for parents published on the website of Malaysia's National Security Council (MKN) says windows should open no more than 12.5 cm, with a latch, lock or window guard, and that beds and furniture should be kept away from windows so children cannot climb up. The MKN guide also advises covering every socket, keeping cables tidy and out of children's reach, and fitting two different kinds of lock on balcony doors.
A 2013 CPSC safety alert reported that about once a month a US child aged 7 months to 10 years died from window cord strangulation, and recommended cordless blinds. Dr Moon adds that you “may need to install a safety gate across your toddler's bedroom door to keep them from wandering when you are not awake”.
Can you put a mattress straight onto a tiled floor in Malaysia?
You can for a few nights, but a mattress left flat on tiles in Malaysia's humid climate can trap moisture underneath and grow mould. Raise it a few centimetres on a slatted base or a breathable mat, keep the room's humidity down with air-conditioning or a dehumidifier, and stand the mattress up regularly so the underside can dry.
MetMalaysia, the national weather service, describes the climate as one of “uniform temperature, high humidity and copious rainfall”, with average daily minimum relative humidity as high as 70% in the wet months. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises keeping indoor humidity below 60%. In the wet months, Malaysia's outdoor air even at its driest can exceed that indoor guide, so a floor mattress in a room without air-conditioning needs airflow underneath.
The Sleep Foundation warns that a mattress on the floor “may result in mildew or mold, particularly in warm or humid environments”. If you air Bettar Play cushions, keep them in the shade: Bettar Play's FAQ says to keep them “away from heat and direct sunlight”.
What frame and mattress suit a toddler floor bed?
A floor-bed frame should be low, stable and plain: a flat slatted base a few centimetres high lets air reach the mattress, smooth edges and no small parts suit a climbing toddler, and the mattress should fit the frame tightly. A single (90 x 190 cm) or super single (106 x 190 cm) mattress, the two bed sizes Bettar Play's FAQ says its cushion sets fit, leaves a toddler room to grow.
The CPSC's toddler-bed rule (16 CFR part 1217, which adopts ASTM F1821) covers guardrails, openings in the mattress support, sharp points and edges, small parts, pinching points and slat strength, a useful checklist for any frame. For cots, the AAP asks that the mattress “fits tightly”; a floor-bed mattress should pass the same test.
| Mattress | Size | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Your child's cot mattress | The size of your cot | Dr Moon's stop-gap: put it on the floor until the new bed arrives. |
| Single | 90 x 190 cm | Narrower than a super single, so more floor is left for play in a small condo bedroom. |
| Super single | 106 x 190 cm | 16 cm wider: a little more room beside the child at bedtime. |
How do you set up a Montessori floor bed, step by step?
Set up a toddler floor bed in this order: confirm your child is ready, choose a spot away from the window, make the room safe, build a breathable base, then add the mattress, a gate and a routine. Doing the safety work first means the room is ready before the first night.
- Check readiness: past the first birthday, often climbing out of the cot.
- Choose a solid inner wall, away from windows, blind cords and balcony doors.
- Anchor every chest of drawers, shelf and TV to the wall.
- Fit window locks or guards (12.5 cm opening at most), lock balcony doors, use cordless blinds.
- Cover sockets; keep cables and small objects off the floor.
- Lay a low, stable slatted frame or breathable mat; bare tiles only as a stop-gap for a few nights.
- Add a firm mattress that fits the frame tightly, and a fitted sheet.
- Fit a safety gate at the bedroom door and at the top of any stairs.
- Keep the room dry and air the mattress regularly.
- Read and play on the bed in daylight; keep the same bedtime steps every night.
Where do play furniture and a play mat fit in a floor-bed room?
A floor-bed room still needs somewhere to play, read and sit. Bettar Play, a family-owned Malaysian business, describes what it makes as play furniture for the home and multipurpose home furniture, and says its aim is to support child development. Bettar Play says its Signature cushion sets work as a play sofa and convert to a single or super single mattress.
The family trade began in the 1960s with mattresses and cushions sold from a lorry, and the family's cushion, pillow and mattress factory makes Bettar Play. The Signature Cushion 8-pc Set has four Large cushions of 90 x 47.5 x 12 cm plus four smaller pieces, with a removable, machine-washable cover. Beside a floor bed, the Signature set can be a reading corner by day, or a floor mattress for a parent who stays close while the child settles.
For play next to the bed, Bettar Play describes the Signature Topper Play Mat (90 x 190 x 2.5 cm) as a soft play mat and a single-size topper, with a 100% natural latex inner layer. At 2.5 cm thick, the Topper Play Mat is a play surface and topper, not a toddler mattress on its own.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Montessori floor bed safe for a baby under 12 months?
Health-authority guidance points to a cot instead. The AAP and the NHS advise that babies under 12 months sleep on their back in a cot, bassinet or Moses basket with a firm, flat mattress and nothing else in it. AMI's paper describes the floor bed from babyhood; this guide follows the AAP and NHS.
Does a Montessori floor bed need rails?
A floor bed does not usually need rails, because it sits only a few centimetres above the floor. The CPSC describes a portable bed rail as “a device intended to be installed on an adult bed to prevent children from falling out”. If a frame has low rails or a house shape, check there is no gap between frame and mattress.
What if my toddler keeps getting out of the floor bed?
Expect it in the first nights. Dr Rachel Moon of the AAP advises keeping the same bedtime routine, calmly leading your child back each time and keeping those moments “brief and boring”, then praising your child in the morning for staying in bed.
Can Bettar Play cushions be used as a floor bed?
Bettar Play's FAQ says its cushions “can be easily pieced together as a mattress”, whether for a toddler bed or a larger bed. Before a toddler sleeps on any pieced-together mattress, check that it is firm and flat with no gaps between the pieces, and never use cushions as a sleep surface for a baby under 12 months.
